(Austin, TX) – Representative Katrina Pierson announced the filing of HB-3971, legislation designed to repurpose the Texas Sunset Commission into a “Department of Government Oversight & Efficiency” (DOGE). Texas DOGE will build on the successes of Elon Musk’s national-level team —renowned for uncovering wasteful federal spending— while ensuring recommendations flow directly to the Texas Legislature.

“Given the unprecedented waste uncovered at the federal level by Elon Musk and his DOGE team, I believe Texas has an opportunity to lead by example,” said Representative Pierson. “My DOGE bill ensures we have our own dedicated organization to investigate inefficiencies within state bureaucracy. By implementing our own DOGE program, we are taking a proactive step to strengthen transparency in public spending and save taxpayer dollars.”

The proposed Texas DOGE will review state agencies’ performance, financial practices, and operations using detailed and data-driven processes in order to lower state spending and minimize waste. Additionally, it will require that any state agency headquartered in or near Austin undergo an evaluation to determine whether relocating could yield cost savings.

Representative Pierson emphasized that the bill is designed to uphold Texas’s longstanding commitment to fiscal responsibility:

“Texans are being taxed out of their homes, any penny of government waste needs to be discovered and put back into the pockets of taxpayers. By forming our own DOGE, we can more effectively root out unnecessary costs while championing innovation and best practices in government.”
